So, Mets fans, a question.

Does any Mets fan actually feel some sort of great rivalry with the Yankees?

Subway series are kind of fun, yes, at least conceptually. But I've heard comments from a number of Yankee fans about this great antipathy that we supposedly hold against them (while denying any such feeling on their side).

The thing is, I've never actually talked to a Mets fan who felt that way, and I've asked a few. I mean, yes, I hate the Yankees - but not to any greater degree then I did before I moved into the NYC area. Three quarters of the baseball fans in this country hate the Yankees. It's nothing special.

I've been leaning towards the "projecting your own issues on us" theory, but tonight I suddenly wondered if maybe I've just been talking to the wrong people. Like, maybe people who actually live in Queens feel that way or something.

I doubt that my friends list is littered with Mets fans, but I thought that I'd throw the question out, just in case.

I'm not a Mets fan, but as a Giants fan I kind of have the feeling about the As. That (sort of) crosstown interleague rivalry doesn't mean nearly as much to me as the rivalry with the Dodgers. I mean I wouldn't say no to another Bay Bridge series (only with 100% less earthquakes and 100% more Giants wining the thing), but it's not this huge thing. I don't hate Oakland any more than I dislike any other AL team.

But then I think regular season interleague play is a gimmick, so what do I know?
